Insulation in Dormers and Converted Attics: How to overcome the Challenge!
When insulating the style of the attic can present unique challenges particularly in a property with Dormer Windows or a converted attic. Therefore they require special attention, the insulation process becomes more complex in these areas and completing a full cold barrier can typically not be achieved without a complete renovation. We have developed two solutions for the challenges faced in these properties, Spray Foam Insulation and Knee Wall and Crawl Space Insulation.
What are the challenges?
Dormers & Converted homes have different architectural elements that differ from the standard attic spaces, features such as sloped ceilings, knee walls, crawl spaces and often have obstructions in the crawl space. When insulating these properties a complete cold barrier cannot be created without a renovation. Luckily we have developed two solutions to maximise the insulation in these spaces.
Method 1: Knee Wall Crawl Space Insulation
Knee Wall & Crawl Space insulation is an energy efficient solution to insulation in these properties; it involves insulation at floor level in the crawl space and on the knee walls. Which will create a cold barrier in the shape of an āLā.
- Assessment and Preparation: A technical assessor will assess the property and determine the requirements and identify any existing issues.
- Air Sealing: Our team will perform air sealing to close any gaps, air leakage areas such as hatches and access areas.
- Insulation: Our team will install earth wool insulation along the knee walls and crawl space areas providing a layer of thermal resistance which will reduce heat transfer and improve your home’s energy efficiency.
- Additional Extras: Our team can install any additional extras such as flooring.
Method 2: Spray Foam Insulation
Spray Foam insulation is suitable for both dormers and converted attics Suitable for both dormers and converted attics, a ventilation card is added within the crawl space, which allows a clean flow of air along the joists. Onto the ventilation card a liquid is sprayed which expands into foam.
- Assessment and Preparation: A technical assessor will assess the property and determine the requirements and identify any existing issues.
- Ventilation Cards: Our team will secure ventilation cards between the roof joists and provide any required outlets for the ventilation system such as roof tile vents.
- Spray Foam Application: Our team will use equipment to spray the foam to the required depth such as 4ā to the targeted areas. Once applied the foam will be left to cure. Once completed the thermal efficiency
- Additional Extras: Our team can install any additional extras such as flooring.
